Paint
Dave can touch up most paint where a repair has been necessary. Fill, Fare, Prime and Paint. Are the standard steps in the average repair.

He also can re-paint your stripes or transom to give your boat a  new look if the hull does not look too bad.

Sometimes certain areas of a boat like the front black of a sport fish vessel or a feature or boot stripe will fade at a different rate than the rest of the boat.

Of course sometimes the whole boat needs a new paint job and Dave can do that too.

Marine Coatings & Finish Work
Return to
Home page
The most important part of any marine finish is preparation. Dave insists on
preparing the surface properly before applying any paint or varnish.

The ablilty of the finish to adhere to the surface will be determined by the quality of the "prep" work.

Below are some common problems Dave
encounters:

1) A request by the owner that a step in the preparation be skipped to save money. This only becomes more expensive in the long run.

2) Owners have the boat waxed too soon after a finish coat is applied. Marine finishes must cure and often a 6 month wait is required.

3) Waxing your boat or oiling wood before painting or varnishing because the oil or wax will make it difficult for the paint or varnish to stick to the surface properly.

NOTE*
The application of Marine Finishes requires special skills, tools and product knowlege. The coatings are also toxic, flammable & can cause skin damage or disorientation if proper protective gear is not worn.

4) Another expensive mistake owners make is to try applying the finishes themselves. Although sometimes the results of a home finish are tolerable, more often, the results are disapointing. Marine paints  are expensive and if not mixed properly they may not "set up".
At times, an owner has even tried to use household products in their place. Not a good idea.

Surface Preparation
Varnish or Brite Work as it is called can really enhance the appearance of your vessel and add to the life of your teak.

Dave will bring the surface down to bare wood and several sealer coats will be applied. Multiple coats of a marine grade varnish will be added,4 coats minimum. 8 coats is preferred to start, with a "light prep and 2 top coats at 6 month intervals for a deep rich look.
